BANGKOK REHAB

Rehab Options in Bangkok Private Hospitals or Outpatient Clinics?

As Asia’s biggest travel hub and the most visited city in the world, Bangkok has also established itself as a major destination for medical tourism. The city’s world-renowned hospitals provide excellent care at a very reasonable cost, as do counselling clinics that provide addiction and mental health services to expats and international clients.

For a city its size, visitors may be surprised to learn that there are relatively few options for rehab in Bangkok. Inpatient treatment is scarce in the city, and the setting is also less relaxing than in other parts of Thailand, such as Chiang Mai or Phuket. Outpatient treatment is available, yet the experience of receiving counselling and support at such rehab centres in Bangkok is less comprehensive and specialised than can be found outside the city.

Options for those seeking a rehab clinic in Bangkok

Private hospitals

With an average stay of just 3-7 days, treatment at these hospital-based facilities typically focuses on initial stabilisation and detoxification. The treatment goal is to stabilise the acute physical and emotional distress caused by recent termination of substance abuse. This type of short-term care is effective at getting you through the very start of the recovery process, as it provides a safe and secure environment where medical support is readily available. Yet the setting feels inevitably sterile, and lacking in recreation or any inspirational activities. Counselling and behavioural therapy are typically absent from private hospitals as well, making additional support vital for preventing a relapse.

Outpatient clinics

Outpatient rehab clinics in Bangkok, while far less immersive than standard inpatient services to be found elsewhere, may be suitable if you suffer from mild or general forms of addiction. Moreover, if you have work commitments that you can’t get away from, drug rehab in Bangkok may also be a viable option, as it is a well-connected city and an outpatient schedule may be able to help while also accommodating your other obligations.
Outpatient centres typically provide a wide range of therapy and counselling, letting you further develop your recovery skills with each session. The clinic determines how intense your programme of treatment will be, yet there are limits to its support levels. Rehab clinics in Bangkok do not generally provide an aftercare programme, peer support or group meetings, and your overall experience will inevitably feel more disjointed than what you would otherwise receive with standard inpatient treatment.

Neither of these rehab options is comprehensive if taken alone, yet the combination may be enough depending on your situation and the needs you have for your recovery journey.

What can you expect from rehab centres in Bangkok?

Because the city has a relatively undeveloped network of drug rehab centres, in many cases, clients will have to go to one location for some addiction treatment services, while visiting another drug rehab in Bangkok to attend to their other needs. The detox stage can be completed at a hospital, while medication can be acquired from a separate psychiatric clinic. Counselling is performed on an outpatient basis, at a different location.

Description:

Part of the world renowned Bangkok Hospital group, the Bangkok Mental Health Rehabilitation and Recovery Center (BMRC) is dedicated exclusively to mental health and addiction disorders. This rehab in Bangkok is very different from other treatment options in Thailand as it is based in a hospital in Bangkok.

They treat mild anxiety, depression and addiction, to more serious psychiatric disorders. The facility consists of an outpatient clinic, an inpatient unit that can accommodate up to seven patients, a Special Care Unit (SCU) for those at high risk and in need of close monitoring. The BMRC also has an area for group exercise, recreational activities and therapeutic learning of skills that may be impaired as a result of mental disorders.

You can be assured of very good care but it would be very different from what traditional rehab would be in the West and more akin to a psychiatric hospital. This could be a good option for clients who have serious detox requirements that require a more medical setting and those who need a higher level of care because of mental health concerns.
